A journey into the art of love to warm the wintry season

The Independent

Closed 7 Mar 2009

Acclaimed director Michael Gandage helmed this 2008 production of Shakespeare's romantic comedy. Derek Jacobi starred as the kill-joy steward Malvolio, and Indira Varma as his ward, Lady Olivia. Victoria Hamilton plays shipwrecked Viola, who disguises herself as a boy and goes to work in Duke Orsino's (Mark Bonnar) court as she searches for her lost brother, Sebastian (played by Alex Waldmann) and tries to woo Lady Olivia on the Duke's behalf, all the while falling in love herself with Orsino.

Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare's most well known comedies, a fun-filled romp of love, lies and mistaken identity in a glorious seaside setting, and this production by Michael Gandage with design by Christopher Oram certainly did not disappoint.
