The play that coined the word "Kafkaesque"
Rory Kinnear returns to the stage for the first time since his Olivier-winning turn as Iago in the National Theatre's 2014 production of Othello. The Skyfall and Penny Dreadful actor will star as Franz Kafka's protagonist Josef K in Nick Gill's adaptation of The Trial, directed by Richard Jones.
The very definition of "Kafkaesque nightmare", The Trial follows the story of 30-year-old Joseph K. as he tried to negotiate a living, waking purgatory of bureaucracy and shadowy characters hellbent on pursuing him. Visited at home by state agents on his birthday and accused of an unspecified crime - neither Joseph nor us ever find out what it is he was accused of - K. is left bewildered by towering bureaucracy and sinister motives lurking beneath it, all to keep in the dark about his supposed transgression. His life becomes a trial - the Trial of the title.
