New London Theatre to change name

Venue will be renamed The Gillian Lynne Theatre

Andrew Lloyd Webber announced last night at his launch for autobiography Unmasked that the New London Theatre will change its name later this year to the Gillian Lynne Theatre, after the iconic choreographer.

A driving force behind many ALW musicals including Cats, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and the theatre's current occupant, School of Rock, Lynne has been widely lauded for her innovative work in dance and was made a Dame back in 2014.

The first West End theatre to be named for a woman, ALW said of the long-overdue change 'Gillian has been a pioneer of British musical theatre and dance. Gillie's groundbreaking work on Cats inspired and launched countless careers in dance. It is only fitting that the theatre in which she created Cats is named in her honour.'
