Wendy, Stomp still makes itself heard across all audiences

It's always testament to a show when it can survive the cutthroat theatre industry to not just be running several years on, but have spawned several successful - and also still running! - international versions. Sometimes it's the magic of the story a la Wicked and The Lion King, or romance and drama which stands the test of time a la Phantom and Les Mis. In the case of Stomp, it's neither dramatic nor magical, but perhaps that's why it's done so well.

With no dialogue, the small cast relies on simple props, their own bodies, and the stage itself to create an hour-long homage to music and percussion. The joyful noise reverberates throughout the theatre, and for once not a single person in the West End's often very multilingual patronage was left out - music is of course a universal language! Well music and humour, with a very Karl Pilkington-esque character weaving many laughs through the cast's loose, mimed narrative.

Could it be updated slightly now that most of it's audience is more accustomed to an iBook than a broom? Most certainly. I'd love to see Stomp keep existing fans a bit more engaged by working in some objects now found in our everyday lives to make it more relatable. Though let's try find a middle-ground somewhere between its current form and the cheese of the Blue Man Group's over-reliance on digital gags.

Born and bred in the UK, in Brighton in fact, there's no denying that Stomp brings its own special kind of cheer to Theatreland throughout the year, and especially during the Holiday season! Always energetic and invigorating, it's a great night out with friends, family or colleagues and located right in the bustle of the West End.
