Refreshingly surprising
After so many mixed reviews I went to the theatre convinced I wouldn’t have a good time and if there was a time in life when I was deeply wrong this was it. It certainly isn’t you regular west end bust out in song in between lines – big fire works musical act – laugh out loud or cry your eyes out musical but it will definitely appeal to those who love their music and have a certain passion for the simple things in life. The beautifully sang dialogs were really well put together in a way that even my ears, more used to the spoken lines of films, did not get tired instead, I got dragged into the whole thing and I found that the 2 hours of show suddenly went really quickly. The main musical acts really enhanced their beautiful voices and the slightly “frenchier than normal” sense of humour of the mistress really was refreshing and done the job putting the story together. All in all it is beautiful and touching and - for the first since Amelie - it really made me want watch a French fi
I was nervous because the movie was so special
The original movie is very strange, haunting and beautiful. Not really a musical with "numbers". Very small and minimal story. Odd moment in history - small town France after WW2. You feel like nothing is going on except this very romantic love affair between a young girl and an auto mechanic. And all the lines are sung. I couldn't have been happier with the terrific way the director and the company created such an exciting rendition of the story. It felt so much like the music but of course was very different. In English, not French. With an extra role to help us get into the idea. Lots of stagecraft to enhance it's fairytale nature. Really lovely. Don't miss it. Thank you for a great night.
Simply wonderful
For fans of the Kneehigh Theatre Company, this will reinforce your opinion. For those new to Kneehigh, just sit back and let magic unfold. Yes, it's all singing, all dancing, but forget any preconceptions. Emma Rice has devised a show that mixes humour, gentleness, emotion, wit and intelligence. The whole company work together, no-one upstaging anyone else, and create an atmosphere that at the end can almost overwhelm. I didn't know the story, had never seen the film, but it didn't matter. Will be going back to experience this wonderful piece of theatre again. Seen in preview at the Gielgud Theatre, London.
Magical
At last! An intelligent, witty, magical show with great music, dancing. Will leave you thinking about it for a long, long time. So much so, that you will be drawn to watch it again, (like me!). Congratulations to all involved.
Ignore the Bad Reviews
We had read the bad reviews on the day we were going to the show so we went with an open mind, but expected the worst. I am pleased to say we thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not the normal "musical" so you will be disappointed if that is what you expect. It has that tonque in cheek feel but we thought it was very well done and the cast seemed to be having a good time too. The second half is the better half but Meow Meow gets both halves started in a very entertaining way.
