"Schmaltzy" is too high praise for this. There is a story to be told, but this doesn't tell it. Sentiment and self-parody are no substitute for good theatre. How on earth did it get taken on at the National? And such wooden acting, apart from Anthony Sher, who does the Topol stereotype well, even if it is only a stereotype.
