Mrs Klein

Mrs Klein at Almeida Theatre

Why see Mrs Klein?

London, 1934. Melanie Klein is one of the most admired, yet controversial, psycho-analysts of her time, renowned for her unique insight into the secret world of childhood.

But her relationship with her psycho-analyst daughter Melitta has been damaged almost beyond repair and an unexpected message from aboard causes a bitter confrontation. The news also poses a mystery that even Mrs. Klein, despite her genius for analysis, cannot solve. It is left to her new assistant, a young refugee from Hitler’s Berlin, to find a possible answer.

Nicholas Wright's witty and poignant study of mother - daughter relationships receives its first major UK revival at the Almeida Theatre. Mrs Klein premiered at the National Theatre in 1988 before transferring to the West End and Broadway.

Nichoals Wright’s other work includes The Reporter, an acclaimed adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials for the National Theatre, episodes of the BBC series The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, The Desert Air, Cressida (for the Almeida) and Vincent in Brixton.

Thea Sharrock previously directed Cloud Nine at the Almeida, A Voyage Round My Father at the Donmar Warehouse, The Emperor Jones at the National Theatre, As You Like It at Shakespeare's Globe, and Equus in the West End and on Broadway.
