George Balanchine’s Serenade is a great piece of 20th-century choreography, set to a score by Tchaikovsky. It has no plot, but evokes with engaging patterns and shifting pace a series of moods inspired by the music.

L’Invitation au voyage, by the choreographer and former Royal Ballet dancer Michael Corder, returns after a long absence. The music is drawn from the atmospheric French songs of Duparc, with the singer among the dancers on stage, while the lyrical choreography is set against new designs for this revival.

Theme and Variations returns to Balanchine and Tchaikovsky, taking its cue from the Imperial Russian style of the choreographer’s youth and set in a grand ballroom, with dazzling technique for the lead female dancer at its centre.
