Why see Written On Skin?
The celebrated opera returns to London!
Considered to be one of opera's most innovative and successful works in modern times, George Benjamin and Martin Crimp's Written On Skin has won over critics the world over, and has been performed by a multitude of companies since its premiere at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2012. Its first performance since its hit 2013 at the Royal Opera House, the work was lauded by both critics and audiences alike, with near-universal acclaim. Meshing together 12th century legend with 21st century sensibilities, the themes of love, violence and the supernatural come together in a stunning production.
Set in medieval Provence, Written on Skin is the searing tale of the powerful Protector and his pure and servile (in his mind) Agnes. When he enlists the help of a young artisan The Boy, to write an illuminated manuscript detailing his life, the illiterate Agnes finds herself in the thrall of the art form and passionately seduces him. When The Protector becomes aware of this betrayal, he resolves to serve up a very tangible slice of revenge.
