Barb Jungr

Barb Jungr at Shaw Theatre

Why see Barb Jungr?

Barb Jungr is without peer in her ability to distill the essence of great performers and their songs into her own unique and contemporary visions.

“Casually virtuosic” (The Guardian) Barb has been universally acknowledged as the leading song stylist in Europe. A fearless singer and performer, her radical and passionate interpretations of Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel and Elvis Presley .have brought her fame on both sides of the Atlantic, Australia and Europe. With her extraordinary and unique voice, able to sing many genres of popular song, Jungr has been compared to Edith Piaf, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee and Tom Waits.

Barb’s inspiration is and has always been the singer Nina Simone, another performer who defied genre categorisation and sang material from every possible source, and whose politics were clearly expressed in her repertoire choices.

Making Simone the centre of this new show, as she has with Brel, Dylan and Presley, she celebrates the great Diva's work through the prism that is Barb Jungr.

Like Simone, Jungr moves effortlessly between genres, confounding definition. Jazz, soul, blues, pop and folk music all find a place in both of their hearts and work, alongside passion and drama.

Accompanied by superb musicians, this stunning show features songs such as ‘Breakdown (and let it all out)’, ‘Aint Got No, I Got Life’, ‘Feeling Good’, ‘Pirate Jenny’, ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’, ‘The Ballad of Hollis Brown’, ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’’, ‘Just Like a Woman’, ‘The Pusher’, ‘My Father’, ‘To Love Somebody’.

"Jungr is an artist who defies easy categorisation. She’s been described as ‘alt. cabaret’ or ‘politicised chanson’, but it’s a bit more complex than that. Like her great heroine Nina Simone, Jungr makes grown-up music that falls in the space between jazz and pop. She calls her art ‘song styling’ and that is exactly what she does - re-styles songs, deconstructing and re-harmonising them, taking tracks we are familiar with and inviting us to listen again. Jungr re-examines the songs through twenty-first century glasses - her slow, bleak but strangely beautiful versions finding a sadness and weirdness in best known songs. Her genius is that she removes the Americana, creating instead a sort of European art music noir…nothing stands between the listener and the song. With Jungr’s pure, quirky, powerful voice to guide you, you’ll find a depth in these songs never previously imagined, (Kersten Mackness)"
