Maggie Smith becomes Brunhilde Pomsel in this one-woman show
Maggie Smith returns to the stage after 12 years this April as she becomes Brunhilde Pomsel in Christopher Hampton's brand new play, A German Life. Secretary to the terrifying Nazi minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, Brunhilde Pomsel became one of the last surviving eyewitnesses of the inside of the Nazi party.
A German Life draws upon Pomsel's personal life testimony as it traverses her time as a penniless secretary in Berlin in the 1930s to her time serving underneath one of the Nazi party's most powerful men. After the war Pomsel was imprisoned, a convict and a silent slice of history. Finally speaking about her experiences in a film entitled 'A German Life' before her death in 2016, the global population finally was able to see the inner workings of one of the largest dictatorial and horrific operations the world has ever seen.
Although Pomsel claimed that she didn't really know what was going on in the inner sanctum of the Nazi Party she did reveal that some of her work took form in editing death counts to exaggertaing rape numbers - Pomsel was at the centre of it all.
In an evening that is sure to be heartbreaking and interesting, witness acting legend Maggie Smith take on the brutalities of one of the world's best keepers of secrets.
