All About Eve Reviews
Frank from London,
MESSY, MISSED OPPORTUNITY
There are two reasons to go to this. 1. to see Gillian Anderson throw her brilliantly honed acting skills around the stage (admittedly in a role whose originator can't be outdone); 2. to remember why All About Eve is such a great film. Ive van Hove's production however, is not a reason to go. The set gives off a distinct vibe of C-grade 80s porn. A great deal of the action is live-projected onto a large screen above the actors, and the roving camera people and stagehands give off the impression that the handsomely-paying audience is getting in the way of a film shoot. That so many scenes happen in the stage wings, unseen by at least a quarter of the house at any one time, also suggests that van Hove enjoys making theatre that's aloof and inaccessible. Pity. This could have been such a beautiful and exciting night at the theatre. P.S. Monica Dolan should win an Olivier for her turn as Karen.

DAZZLING yet Underwhelming
A stylish and well acted production that dazzles with technical wizardry but is let down by a flat book that feels about as timely as the pocket calculator
Based on the 1950 film by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and 1946 short story by Mary Orr, All About Eve, now playing at the Noel Coward Theatre, tells the all too familiar tale of a successful woman Margo Channing usurped by a younger fan.
