Why See Phoenix Dance: The Rite of Spring/Troy Game?
A Bold Double Bill That Explores Ritual & Reinvention
A major driving force of the UK's Northern dance scene, Phoenix Dance Theatre is the longest standing contemporary dance company outside of the capital city with a reach that extends around the world. The groundbreaking ensemble presents a fascinating double bill at London's Peacock Theatre in the Summer of 2019, exploring the themes of group rituals and reinvention in two vastly different ways.
The evening begins with a bold adaptation of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring Ballet, a captivating avant-garde work that conjures the riot of color and violent birth pangs of Spring as reflected in a primitive seasonal ritual in which a young girl is chosen as a sacrifice and dances herself to death. This is followed by a revival of Robert North's 1947 work Troy Game, a change in tone that is lifted by a buoyant Brazilian-flavored score in its joyful and ritualistic celebration of the strength found in community as well as the the high-flying aspirations and achievements of mankind.
Performance date: 27 June 2019
