A musical obsessed with spring-loaded Americana, and how fame and that most senior office of President are intrinsically interwoven, feels intensely prescient despite being written almost 30 years ago
What'sOnStage
What drives you to assassinate your President? Sondheim's 90s musical, Assassins, looks into the motives, passions and desperations of 9 Americans who attempted to assassinate the man in charge. Some failed, some succeeded but the main question is, why?
After opening off-Broadway in 1990, Sondheim's Assassins finally got the credit it was due in 2004 when it won 5 Tony Awards when it premiered on Broadway. Based off an idea by Charles Gilbert Jr, this dark and humorous musical review spans several musical genres and many decades in a dizzying whirl which finally comes to a halt with the most famous assassination of them all John F. Kennedy.
With hits like "Everybody's Got The Right" and "The Ballad of Booth" Assassins is back in London for a strictly limited three week run. The magic of Sondheim takes you on a rollercoaster through the dark, the bold and the hysterical, taking you into the minds of the people who made history by simply pulling the trigger.
Opening night: 20 March 2018
