A Joyful Celebration of the UK's Black Culture
A story told through the eyes of the very first Caribbean immigrants to set foot on UK soil, Phoenix Dance Theatre's Windrush: Movement of the People chronicles a powerful journey that marked the start of the post war immigration boom and a brand new Britain. The exciting new piece by Phoenix Artistic Director Sharon Watson uses contemporary dance to explore the trials, tribulations and triumphs of the first Jamaican community.
Set to a stunning soundtrack by award-winning jazz musician Gary Crosby OBE, the movement piece starts with the voyage of the SS Empire Windrush, on which 492 Jamaicans travelled to start a new life. Once landed, subtle gestures and faceless dancers evoke the daily prejudice they would have been faced with. Yet uplifting pieces and a stunning duet portray the newcomers creating their own opportunities, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on the social fabric of our country.
Please note: Windrush will also be presented alongside Shadows by Christopher Bruce and Calyx by Sandrine Monin as part of a mixed programme.
