Why See Handbagged?

Comedy Theatre

OLIVIER WINNER FOR BEST AFFILIATE THEATRE PRODUCTION!

Triccyle Theatre's "wickedly funny" (Evening Standard)comedy is taking the West End by storm after a hugely successful run in Kilburn in 2013.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the closed doors at Buckingham Palace, when the Queen takes her weekly audience with the Prime Minister of the Day? What would that audience be like, with a woman who is born only six months after you, and has risen through the ranks of the ruling Conservative Party, the mere daughter of a greengrocer in Grantham?

Handbagged takes on a dark and witty fictionalised look at the interactions of arguably the two most recognised powerful women in Britain over the course of 11 years of weekly meetings at Buckingham Palace. And don't worry, you're not seeing double. As you watch their younger counterparts engage in battle, their older selves float about the action to reminisce on events of the time, adding their own acerbic comments and context to the proceedings. Liz and Maggie aren't to be trifled with - least of all by each other!

With a cheeky wink and a nod to Peter Morgan's play The Audience, Moira Buffini's "irresistibly mischievous" (The Independent) comedy speculates on that most provocative of questions: What DID the world's most powerful women talk about behind closed palace doors?
