Cameron Leigh is outstanding in the central role. Not only does she embody Piaf in her posture and physical gestures, but her powerhouse, heart-wrenching interpretation of the repertoire is phenomenal.
The Stage
Pam Gem's highly praised biopic of the legendary opera singer makes a welcome return to London after a seven-year absence. Last seen at the Lyric Theatre in 2008 and directed by Jamie Lloyd, this revival marks the centenary of Edith Piaf's birth. Arguably France's most famous daughter, we follow Piaf's tragic story as she rises to fame from the brothel where she was born, to the heady heights of stardom and immortality.
The story takes place in 1930s Paris where a young woman sings plaintively, but beautifully to passersby, who mostly pass by not noticing her. We later see her reach the height of stardom, but also the troubled soul behind the legend; a promiscuous alcoholic and drug addict who was unable to deal with the pressures of celebrity.
With live performances of Piaf's most beloved songs, this play-with-music is a heart-tugging exploration into the woman behind the legend; a demanding role that garnered Jane Lapotaire a Tony Award on Broadway in 1981. This latest revival is playing at the Charing Cross Theatre throughout the Christmas period.
