Why see The Same Deep Water As Me?
Playwright sensation Nick Payne continues trend of brilliance
In the wake of his prize-winning success with Constellations, playwright Nick Payne brings us The Same Deep Water As Me. It is a darkly comic affair, which concerns a duo of small-time solicitors who are tempted into making a quick, dubious buck by exploiting the 'no-win-no-fee' culture of our age.
Terrifically talented despite his tender years, Payne has a knack for delightfully witty and cutting one-liners. Along with the satire comes a potent comment on the shifting ethical code within which people justify their means of making money in the financially uncertain times of our generation. A technically brilliant cast strikes the perfect balance between satire and seriousness in this brilliant new play from a playwright who is surely soon to be a household name.
What is it about?
Andrew and his boss Barry work as solicitors for Scorpion Claims, a Luton based law firm which is showing little promise of progress of the making of decent money. Kevin, an ex school friend of Andrew?s appears one day, wanting to claim for a prang on his car received from a supermarket lorry. Realising that the most innocuous of collisions can be wildly exaggerated at little risk within the 'no-win-no-fee system, Kevin devises what seems to him to be a bulletproof method for making easy cash. Andrew and Barry soon become embroiled and the lies spin out of control, leaving the characters to weigh up the moral quandaries they have unwittingly forced themselves to reconcile with.
