Why See Doctor Faustus?

PlaysStars on Stage

All things that move between the quiet poles shall be at my command.

The erudite director Jamie Lloyd (The Ruling Class) brings this brand new adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's epic 400-year-old play to explosive life, with none other than Game of Thrones hero Kit Harington as the titular Doctor Faustus, a man drawn into a pact with the Devil himself in exchange for untold magical powers.

With two new acts written by Colin Teevan, Lloyd brings Faustus kicking and screaming into the present day, promising to examine his rise to world-famous conjurer and intoxicating international heart-throb in an age that has raised celebrity culture to the status of the deities of old. Darkly comic, expect a fantastical theatrical experience as the magic and the absolute power of Faustus develops, leading to a spectacular downfall.

Known as Game of Thrones leading man Jon Snow, Kit Harington is no stranger to the London stage, although this will be his first West End outing since 2010's Posh at the Royal Court. Of his new stage challenge, Harington says, "there will be things that delight an audience while they watch this man being dragged to hell."

a divine tale of hubris: what is doctor faustus about?

An academic of dizzying ability, the scholar Doctor Faustus has arrived at the limits of knowledge that his traditional study allows. Hungry for more, he takes up the practice of magic and conjures up a devil in the form of Mephistopheles. Seeing that trading in the dark arts can bring him unimaginable wealth and fame, Faustus sends Mephistopheles away to his master Lucifer armed with an offer: grant Faustus absolute power for twenty-four years and afterwards he intends to relinquish his soul to Lucifer for an eternity in damnation...
