Ingenious!
The Guardian
James Lance and John Gordon Sinclair take over from Robert Webb and Mark Heap as as P.G. Wodehouse's best loved idle rich boy, Bertie Wooster, and his trusty valet, Jeeves. This new story - written just for the stage with splendid justice done to Wodehouse's dialogue-heavy style of writing - sees Wooster play matchmaker during a weekend in the country.
However the anecdote, in true Wooster fashion, is regaled using a hired West End Theatre with Jeeves stepping in to assist his indulgent employer with the costume and set design, as well as playing most of the other characters. The result is a fast-paced, silly, but immensely enjoyable play-within-a-play that boasts ingenious comic timing.
Bertie Wooster is called upon to play matchmaker during an otherwise delightful trip to the countryside. He somehow has to ensure that his host's drippy daughter, Madeline Bassett, doesn't stray from her plans to marry his newt-fancying friend, Gussie Fink-Nottle.
But there's a catch. If Bertie can't keep the wedding from veering of course, he might just have to give up his coveted bachelor life and marry the ghastly girl himself! On top of that, he's been tasked with stealing a silver cream jug by his Aunt Dahlia (a hoarder of fancy serving ware) which is owned by Madeline's father, and his weekend's host.
