"Delight in its ingeniousness."
The Sunday Times
Winner of the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in America and a 2015 Olivier Award, The Nether examines the dark possibilities within the online world, when technology and sexual fantasy collide. Following a critically lauded run at The Royal Court in 2014, the show has been granted a West End transfer to The Duke of York's theatre for Winter 2015.
Imagine a virtual wonderland designed to cater for your every sexual whim, whilst offering you a complete sensory experience, and total anonymity. But as ever, the dark side of this world threatens our very well-being - a young detective discovers the darkest cracks and corners in the system in this futuristic crime thriller.
Jennifer Haley's clever and suspenseful play about this online wonderland is a clever and thought-provoking meditation on the voyeur, and the lengths we already go to to change what we are below the surface of reality.
Whilst investigating a deviant name Sims, Morris, a young detective finds she must delve into Nether, and discover the Hideaway, a virtual reality that lets its users become whatever they want in this hidden sanctuary. The denizens, a teacher, a gentleman and a young girl are not interested in being liberated, especially now the lines between fantasy and reality are blurred more than ever.
