Why See A Chorus Of Disapproval?

Stars on StageComedy Theatre

A long overdue revival!

Alan Ayckbourn's A Chorus of Disapproval made its world premiere at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, in 1984, before being restaged at The National Theatre. Written to mark the author's 25th anniversary as a playwright, this is the first West End revival since. Both hilarious and touching it's directed by Trever Nunn and Rob Brydon stars as Dafydd.

What is A Chorus Of Disapproval about?

Guy, a painfully shy people pleaser is relocated through work to the small town of Pendon and in a bid to find friends auditions for the local operatic society?s production of The Beggars Opera. There he meets Dafydd, the director, along with other members of the society. Dafydd, with an agenda of his own, invites Guy to his home where Guy meets Dafydd's wife, Hannah.

When alone, Guy tells Hannah that he is recently widowed. Touched, she opens up, and admits to Guy that Dafydd, a lawyer by trade, is hardly ever at home, and hints that their marriage is no longer physical. Dafydd interrupts and offers Guy a small part in the opera, then, taking him aside, asks Guy whether he's heard anything about his company's plans to acquire some land owned by one of his clients. Guy hasn't but being a man who finds it impossible to say no to anything or anyone, he agrees to inform Dafydd if he hears anything.

What follows, in typical Ayckbourn fashion, is a multitude of mayhem, confusion, back stabbing and bed hopping, as the hapless Guy finds himself embroiled in small town shenanigans where he has to deal with local swingers, a frustrated housewife, fighting over underpants, bribery, lots of infidelity and even more misunderstanding, and a possible date with a hangman?s rope.
