The Motherf**ker with the Hat

Closed August 20, 2015

The acting is first-rate, with particularly fine work from Perez as the mercurial Veronica and from Yul Vazquez as Jackie's highly idiosyncratic cousin. This is a triumph for the National.

THE LONDON PREMIERE OF A BROADWAY HIT

Broken trust, misplaced millinery and drug addiction all play their part in this chaotic, yet extremely funny comedy that first premiered on Broadway in 2011 and garnered six Tony Nominations for author Stephen Adly Guirgis. All at once poetic, profane and hilarious, this is a crackingly smart insight into love and addiction in the Big Apple.

Helmed by controversial ex-Tricycle Theatre director Indhu Rubasingham, it stars Martin Behrman in his first role at the National Theatre, taking on the role of our hero Jackie, which was originated on Broadway by comedian Chris Rock in his stage acting debut.

what is it about?

Jackie has just been released from prison for drug dealing, and he is determined to go straight. In fact, he goes straight to his girlfriend Veronica, who is still a drug-addled mess. About to jump into bed for an urgent session, he notices a hat in her bedroom; a man's hat that clearly isn't his. Angry and betrayed, he storms out to his drug counsellor Ralph for advice. However what Jackie doesn't realise is that Ralph knows more about Veronica's mysterious hat than he's letting on.

Things come to a head when Jackie discovers who the mysterious owner of the hat is; in anger, he obtains and fires a gun into the ceiling. Realising that this action means he will have broken parole, he heads dejectedly to prison. Will he ever forgive Veronica? And in turn, will she stop messing with Jackie's life?
