Three Days in the Country

Closed October 21, 2015

"It is an evening where the wit of the dialogue captivates. And, as in an elegant dance, the play keeps turning on its own heel, moving between comedy and anguish, reminding us of love as an impractical joke."

JOHN SIMM RETURNS TO THE LONDON STAGE

Doctor Who and Life on Mars star John Simm stars as a wandering tutor in the mid-nineteenth century who turns the lives of an eccentric household on its head, in this new adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's A Month In The Country. During three days over a languid summer, the family learn about love in all its forms and even across generations. Patrick Marber's new adaption takes on and pares down this Chekov-like play to bring it to new audiences. Produced by Sonja Friedman.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

John Simm stars as the handsome new tutor who turns the lives of an eccentric household, by introducing reckless, romantic desire into their world. Over three days one summer the both generations of the family will learn lessons in love: first, forbidden, maternal and platonic, ridiculous and lost love. Ivan Turgenev's iconically moving tragi-comedy, A Month in the Country, has long inspired various films, a ballet and even the plays of Chekhov himself. It's presented here in a new adaption by Patrick Marber whose work includes the Donmar Warehouse's recent production of Closer.

The original play was recently played on Broadway starring Orange is the New Black's Taylor Schilling and Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage as the tutor.
