George Farquar's final play is revived at the National Theatre
First performed in 1707, this raucous money and sex comedy by George Farquhar follows two young drifting gentlemen, Archer and Aimwell, two young gentlemen who have fallen on hard times who plan to travel through small towns, entrap young heiresses, embezzle their money and move on. However, the plan falls at the first hurdle when they reach the first town when Aimwell falls truly in love with the beautiful Dorinda. With a host of comedic and outlandish characters, welcome this slice of 18th century farce into the 21st century.
When two dissolute dandies lose all their money gambling in London, they flee their debtors to provincial Linchfield with an audacious plan; to marry a weathy heiress and abscond with their fortune. The name of this plan? The Beaux Strategem.
Hiding out at the local inn, the two pose pose as master and servant, and meet a teeming variety of obstacles: a dodgy landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a passionate French Count, a maid on the make, a drunken husband, a furious butler, a natural healer and a strange, turbulent Irish priest.
But when the two fall in love with their respective targets, they truly become vulnerable to being discovered. Will they carry on with their audacious plan?
