The Master Builder Reviews
Suzanne Logeman from London today...from Cape May, New Jersey, USA
SO DISAPPOINTING
Sadly, this production is horribly marred by Hare's uneven Interpretation and by Warchus' questionable casting. We lost count of the times Snook expressed emotion by putting both hands up to her head. (23in Act 2...if we were taking shots each time, we would have been quite drunk). Fiennes seemed to be acting in a completely different play, era, style...and perhaps attempting to make up for a weak supporting cast by chewing a bit of scenery. (The night we saw this, there was an understudy for the doctor who was quite good..) No spoilers here but to say the use of the swing at the end is distracting...and perhaps put focus on the wrong character at a crucial moment? I have been a fan of Fiennes' theater career since Hamlet at The Hackney Empire; I was so disappointed by both his awkward performance and by the entire production in general, which seemed simultaneously striving to be current and awfully dated. I would NOT recommend this...for anyone.
