Known for his captivating performances on stage and screen, actor John Malkovich now heads backstage as he directs the London premiere of Zach Helm's Good Canary at the capital's most intimate and sought-after venue.
This won't be the first time Malkovich has revisited the play. Since directing it's 2007 Paris premiere in French, he has also opened the show in Spanish in Mexico. Of the English-speaking debut he has said he's "very happy" even more so "to be doing it in English – which will be a relief".
Full of twists and turns, Good Canary concerns Jack and Annie, a young married couple in New York City. As Jack's star is on the rise, Annie finds herself being pushed into addiction as she struggles to cope with the public scrutiny of being married to a well-known novelist. Dark and witty, their lives begin to unravel as self-destruction intertwines with mental illness, relationship and the cost of creativity.
