Why See Richard III?
A new Richard III for 2024
The Globe's Artistic Director Michelle Terry steps into the boots of the infamous monarch, whose own reviled reputation mostly stems from this portrait by Shakspeare, thought to be written in service to the Tudors who dispatched him. Ruthless in his pursuit of the crown, join Terry as she crusades to the heart of power, offering no mercy to those in her wake.
What is the story?
Narcissistic and power hungry Richard III is envious of his brother, King Edward IV's after his victory in the long civil war. Malicious and bitter about his physical deformity, Richard grows ever more self obsessed and begins to secretly aspire to the throne, and decides to kill anyone who gets in his way on his path to becoming King.
By the time Richard III reaches the throne, his reign of terror has caused fear among the common people. And has also caused others to challenge his position, one being the earl of Richmond. The ghosts of Richard's past pay him a visit in a terrible dream the night before his dispute with Richmond, and ultimately lead him to his end whilst on the battlefield.
