Bellini's fiery masterpiece is staged by the ENO for the first time ever in Christopher Alden's production, originally for Opera North. Far from ancient Gaul, Aldren conjures up a new setting for the embittered high priestess. Now the leader of an isolated pagan community in 1850, Norma must contend with the threat of invasion from modernity and bureaucracy and protect her village, whilst secretly being in love with the besuited cad Pollione, the very embodiment of the enemy.
Norma is the story of a druid priestess and community of pagans living in the wilds of mid 19th century America who are threatened by the invasion of quickly evolving society around them. Torn between duty and desire, Norma falls in love with Pollione, the enemy and bears his children. When Pollione's eye strays, Norma is stuck in a quagmire, should she reveal her betrayal to her people? War and the anger of the gods are invoked in this highly emotive drama that pits passionate love against the bitter-sweet taste of revenge.
This brand new production including one of the most demanding parts in the soprano repertoire is sure to bring a new passion to the London Coliseum!
