Why See The Queen Of Spades?

Classical & Opera

BACK AFTER A 20-YEAR ABSENCE AT THE ENO

Based on a short story by Pushkin, Tschaikovsky takes on a tale about greed and obsession that he has packed with his characteristic sumptuous melodies and caustic wit. This production marks the swan song of ENO's musical director Edward Gardner. This opera will be the third collaboration with Olivier Award-winning director David Alden after the critically acclaimed Otello and Peter Grimes.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

A much-aged countess possesses the winning touch at playing cards, which has garnered the admiration - and envy - of those around her. When a poor soldier hears about her prodigious skill, he vows to learn her secret, even to the point of killing her for it. In order to get close to her, he befriends the Countess' young, naive daughter and cruelly uses her for his own ends. Will he gain what his heart covets? Or will there be a harsh price to pay for his greed and evil actions?

Peter Bronder sings the role of the obsessed officer Hermann; soprano Giselle Allen sings as Lisa, the old Countess’s grand-daughter and mezzo-soprano Felicity Palmer sings the role of the Countess.
