Not About Heroes

Closed December 6, 2014

These poems are not about heroes; my subject is war, and the pity of war. Yet these elegies are to this generation in no sense consolatory. They may be to the next. All a poet can do today is warn! That is why true poets must be truthful.

Wilfred Owen, 1918

Why See Not About Heroes?

Plays

CELEBRATING TWO OF ENGLAND'S MOST CELEBRATED WAR POETS

In this centenary year marking the start of World War One, this searing play examines the friendship in the face of horrors of the front line through the eyes of two of Britain's most celebrated war-time poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. Sassoon was hospitalised after being wounded and decorated for bravery; his satirical poetry described the horrors of the trenches, and criticised the leaders who, in his view, were responsible for a jingoism-entrenched war to no end. In hospital he met Wilfred Owen, suffering shell shock and accused of cowardice. Their chance meeting would have a profound effect on both their lives.

A FRIENDSHIP THROUGH TRAGEDY

The play focuses on the writings of both men during period of respite that the two men had when recovering from their respective traumas at Craiglockhart War Hospital. Although ultimately both men would return to the front (Sassoon was injured by a gunshot to the head but survived, while Owen was killed in the trenches just one week before Armistice Day) but their legacy is brought to stunning life here. Including their works Anthem for Doomed Youth, Mental Cases, Strange Meeting, Exposure and The Dead Beat, we also hear autobiographical writings and excerpts from letters. A truly poignant experience.
