Groundbreaking with strokes of genius
The Telegraph
Taking inspiration from the Jewish myth of a clay man, 1927 Theatre brings their critically acclaimed play to the West End from the Young Vic for a limited transfer. Based on the Jewish myth of a man who created a man of clay as a starting point this original production explores the story of a very ordinary man and the machine he created. A truly multi-sensory experience, the show combines original animation, entrancing music and live performance to explore one of the great questions of our modern world - do we control technology, or does it control us?
We follow a geeky young man called Robert, who by day works in a dystopian nightmare backing up, well, backup data. Obsessed with the latest gadgetry, he buys a top of the range new latest must-have gizmo from his friend, Phil Sylocate. The gadget is a Golem who will do Robert’'bidding and fulfill every wish., fulfil his every restless wish, all in the name of making his life easier. After all, the Golem can be turned off at the end of the day, right? But not for long of course, as the Golem becomes a sentient being, and takes over Robert's waking life. A timely reminder of the dangers of over-reliance on technology?
