Deep within the gloom of the decaying Satis House, Dicken's wraith like Miss Havisham sits in stasis, with clocks stopped at 8:40 am, the moment she found out she had been jilted on her wedding day by a nefarious con-man. Rather than moving on, she inhabits the betrayal fully, leaving the decorations and regalia to rot, as she herself stays in her ragged bridal dress, with one shoe off, for she had not fully finished getting dressed at the moment her heart was broken...
Featuring one of literatures most beguiling figures, Miss Havisham's Expectations is a new play in which the woman herself tells us her side of the story, from her gleeful 'training' of her adopted daughter Estella in the art of being an icy femme fatale, to the masterful way she appears to shape the life of Pip, whilst evading any attempts to salvage her own sorry existence.
Written by Di Sherlock and starring Linda Marlowe, Miss Havisham's Expectations was first shown at the Edinburgh fringe in 2012, where Marlowe's performance of this darkly comic monologue won raves. Playing in rep as part of the 'Dickens with a Difference' season.
