A PERFECT CHILD-FRIENDLY SHOW IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS!

Hans Christian Anderson's charming fairytale provides the basis of this sparkling new production, which is set to touch down at the Charing Cross Theatre this Christmas. Follow the adventures of Brian the Brave, a poor soldier returning home from war as he happens upon a mysterious tinder box (used for lighting fires), and sets out to find his true love, armed with the box's three magical wishes.

Filled with lovely costumes and accompanied with the ingenious use of classical music, and audience interaction, this kid-friendly version of famous folk tale from Scandinavia's best storyteller will be great for little ones and their parents looking to expand their canon of Anderson fairy tales, as well as bringing a sweet touchof heroism to Christmas in the West End!

The story's darker origins

The original tale of The Tinderbox was rather less-child friendly, and definitely took on a more dark tone. The soldier of the story took a more mercenary role, conning an elderly witch out of both the tinder box and her worldly riches - all before lopping off her head, the poor woman. Using his newfound wealth and the three monstrous magical dogs that are commanded by the box, he cons his way into the upper echelons of Danish society, but goes too far when he tries to magic the princess away with him!

Caught and sentenced to hang for his crime, he requests a last smoke - but he strikes the tinderbox, and one of the dogs rescues him just in time. But rest assured, this version of The Tinderbox is an altogether more pleasant affair, and invites young members of the audience to take part in the singing, dancing and be part of the story!
