Following last year's successful staging at the Open Air Theatre, To Kill A Mockingbird makes a much-awaited return with a brand-new cast. Last year it was awarded Winner of the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Play Revival. This production takes place ahead of a brand-new UK tour.
Set in the pre-civil rights era Deep South, Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel sees racial injustice envelop a small-town community. When a local black man, Tom Robinson is accused of raping a local white girl, lawyer Atticus Finch must seek the truth through his courage and compassion, whilst his daughter, Scout - a pre-teen girl on the cusp of adulthood - brings new hope to a neighbourhood thrown in turmoil.
As Finch toils to uncover the truth, he finds himself ostracised at every turn, and at the apex of the story a group of men led by the girl's racist father, are intent on lynching Tom. This danger is averted when Scout, her brother Jem, and friend Dill shame the mob into dispersing by forcing them to view the situation from Atticus' and Tom's points of view.
In the meantime, the three children are uncovering a mystery of their own - who is their elusive neighbour Boo Radley? - and find that despite their scared perceptions of him, he possesses a heart of gold.
“Mockingbirds just make music; they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out. That’s why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird”
