A celebration of the works of Frederick Ashton.
In an eagerly anticipated triple bill, the best of Frederick Ashton's quintessential English-style ballet are performed this autumn by the Royal Ballet. The first of the ballets is his 1965 work Monotones, danced as a pas de trois to Satie's supernatural piano works Trois Gymnop dies, followed by a more modern masterpiece that Ashton created the following year, this time to Trois Gnossiennes. The resulting diptych is a groundbreaking foray into modernisitic ballet.
The last piece in this gala is The Two Pigeons, a moving narrative about a man who abandons his fiancee for an adventure with a band of gypsies. Idealistic and geadstrong, he is oblivious to the love she clearly shows for him - thankfully he realises in time that he truly loves her, and returns to her to save their relationship.
