Entertaining with funny moments, but sometimes mawkish and sentimental

My first thought was that this shouldn’t have been a musical, as the unmemorable songs are the weakest thing about it. (Imagine my surprise when I find out it’s in fact a jukebox musical ie weaving a story around pre-existing songs, and that these songs are by someone one review describes as a “Britpop legendâ€. Heigh ho. ) Anyway, the production is slick, as you’d expect are such a long run, the show is entertaining and occasionally funny (the best joke for my money being the one about Sheffield United) but for me it was occasionally mawkish and sentimental too. But plainly a lot of the audience have more tolerance for this kind of thing (and perhaps for northern self-pity) than I do, as many were in tears.
