An Enemy of the People Reviews

POWERFUL MONOLOGUE
Highly enjoyable and relevant play. Very talented actors - Matt Smith delivered a particularly poignant and thought-provoking monologue on societal decay, corruption and malaise. Wish we’d contributed during the audience participation. Would recommend to everyone!

VACUOUS 'MODERNISATION' AND STAGED RATHER THAN PERFORMED.
A substancial rewriting of the original text added nothing - quite bereft of any insights or penetrating contemporary relevance - and was almost invariably superficial and quite distracting or to no purpose. Mat Smith himself was sadly utterly flat, unidimensional - and in his final diatribe against 'society' just monotonously boomed into a microphone. The cast had no unity and did not behave as a company. It would be invidious to give some any mention. The staging had some good touches - hence 2 stars rather than one.

ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE AT THE DUKE OF YORK
Pre theatre meal at Browns was great as were the pre booked G&T’s in the bar. This version of the play is modern and well produced and very enjoyable until Matt Smith does his Town Hall speech in the 2nd half. This completely ruined the play and our night as it was an (admittedly theatrical) outburst against modern society, capitalism and the way our country is run. Pretty juvenile left wing stuff in my view and unlikely to impress an audience who have paid £100+ for a ticket. Please don’t waste your money.
