TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

Excellent play with superb characterisation particularly from Jack and Flo (Armstrong and Bailey). Their dialogue is funny and believable, helped by impeccable timing and delivery. Armstrong’s stories hold the audience’ attention and the monologues provide immediate mood change. Salt of the earth Rubarb Eddie, maligned but innocent is loved not least for returning the tapes. The theme of the play - preserving stories - is current and necessary particularly in a world of bias and distortion. The image of leaving a window open to charge a car overnight contrasted with Flo’s need to always lock her front door clearly displays generational differences. The Chair lift, up or down, reflects the values we all make. An excellent play, so convincingly acted with a wide angled set, detailed and well thought out.

SAD AND FUNNY OBSERVATIONS ON AGEING

Marvellous set and acting, very funny with some wince-inducing comments and behaviour about ageing. I particularly liked the comment from Jack about treating losing her phone as if a child had died. There's a rather irrelevant sub-plot and the children of the couple in their nineties look too young and are too tech-savvy for people nearing retirement themselves.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

a very unfunny Richard Bean new play which did not meet any of our high expectations, having seen One Man and Two Governors. A very disappointing evening
