SUPERB SHOW

Went to see this with my 5 and 7 year old children. They thought it was wonderful and were absolutely captivated from start to finish. The sets and special effects were amazing. I would thoroughly recommend this show.

YES

Two white haired golden oldies went to see the afternoon preview today [ grandson was on half term holiday with mum and dad so missed it ! ] we loved it. The wit in the script is divine, child actors youthful but mature. The Charlie we saw was exceptional, his voice a delight to listen to.The costumes and sets are fantastic from the initial distant smoking chimneys to the emotion of the set with the great glass elevator, all worked well on different levels. It was not pantomime but worked like the best trad panto does, something for everyone. I found the use of the TV super but will not say more so it remains a surprise for the next 10 years. A little tweak of joy to the end would give it 5 gold stars.I want to see it again.[ I want,I want, I want !]

CRACKING NEW WEST END ARIVAL!

This is an amazing adaptation of the book- better and a more accurate reproduction than both films. Strong performances throughout, the five children were excellent, Douglas Hodge captured Wonka's mixture of uncertainty, cynicism, romantic and confidence with great aplomb. Nigel Planer was the star though with a fantastic performance. Very clever use of special effects, very strong musical score which bought the book up to the current day and costumes bright, high quality and perfect for each character. This is a very special show and will go on to achieve much recognition.

FANTASTIC

I, a 67year old pensioner,my 35 year old daughter and my 7 year old grandson went to see this show and we were not disappointed. As a regular theatre goer I think I have experienced all genre of theatre for both adult and child audiences. I thought this was the best production I have ever seen. The scenery was brilliant and the acting great. We all would love to see it again.

A WORLD OF PURE IMAGINATION

Prepare to be blown away buy the magical sets, laugh with the oompah lumpahs and marvel as Willy Wonka takes you on a magical carpet ride of emotions.

SUPERB

This is a show which I would 100% recommend to see. A show for all the family, it is full of imaginative visual effects and scenery. The children in the show upstage the adults with their different personalities which they play with superb conviction. The entire show is a delight from start to finish and I feel that it will be on, in the West End, for a very long time.

GREAT FUN AND HEART WARMING

A really fun show - Wonka (Douglas Hodge) sparkled casting his magic over the show. Charlie (Keir Edkins O'Brien) was charming - he stole my heart - you could see why Wonka wanted him to get the factory! Always a concern having a musical with so many children, but they were excellent and the quality of acting and singing impressive.

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - FAB BRILL MUST SEE

I read mixed reviews on this but we went with open minds on Wed evening 5th June with my 30yr old daughter (who once played Violet B in a school production!) What a super show, we loved it, the music / songs were excellent such a bril alternative from the familiar and original movie.. This gave a real insight into the real Charlie and his life his mum and dad who I must say were really good, they sung such a lovely number together....Charlie and the rest of the kids were absolutely brilliant... super performances especially by Charlie and Verucca Salt.... loved Grandpa Jo (Nigel Planer) and the other grandparents they were super, Douglas Hodge was just brill as Willie Wonka - could watch and listen to him over and over again, Oompa Loompas we just laughed they were great fun, what a great way to re-invent them for the stage! A great cast a good set and standing ovations for them all.... a great experience for young and old would deff recommend. Cant wait to go see again!!!

TODAY'S MATINEE

Went to matinee with my boys today 11 and 7 who thought it was wonderful and magical, even though they know the story they gasped when Charlie found the ticket Second. half some amazing sets especially mike tv and the squirrels , but like the previous comment I too felt it went a little flat at the end.It seemed a little rushed. But they could have had a better finally. A sign of a good show is that it went far to quick!!

GREAT IN PARTS

There is plenty to find impressive about this show:an obviously expensive and ever-changing set, several cracking tricks and a talented cast. But it lacked comedy and the songs were dire. I am not generally a Tim Minchin fan but the musicality of Matilda was played so well that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sounds a bit tame and forgettable in comparison. And the heart just wasn't present. I kept hoping that it was all about to get braver, ruder, brasher, camper. And, okay this is a personal preference, when are child leads going to be allowed to have regional accents? But don't get me wrong, it was worth seeing and your kids will almost certainly love it.

LET DOWN

I brought tickets to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for my sisters 50th Birthday and was very excited by previous reviews but to be honest, left the theatre a little dissapointed. Firstly thought I thought the actor playing Charlie on the evening performance on 3rd July was amasing as was Augustus but the other 3 were not so good. I couldn't understand Violet or Mike TV as they sang and was all a bit manic and Veruca wasn't stroppy enough far to much ballet enphasis on her character. The first half was a bit slow and I felt more time should have been given to the factory, second half was better but still a little flat as the music was all a bit dreary and the ending was a real let down. I think some of the music from the original film should have been used as it told the story better and was more uplifting.

NEEDS WORK

there is a good musical in here somewhere but its far from the finished article main production values absolutely superb, performances all good (but not stand out - yet - douglas hodge seemed unsure of the character - theres no development no insight into this fasinating character, but hes still superb if rather underplaying the role ) main issue is only one good song and far to static first half - there all in bed for goodness sake - needs 20 mins taken out and two more GOOD songs - second half much better but too busy as if they dare not let more than a minute go by without another set change. disappointing but still early days ?

DISAPPOINTING !!

We had been really looking forward to seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory however we where disappointed. It was very slow and we where constantly waiting for it to get going but it never really did. The humpa lumpas where not as good as they had been reviewed.

NO WOW FACTOR

I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed following the long awaited theatre production. Yes, in places it did make you realise how great theatre can be and how v well certain areas were adapted however, for me there was no 'wow' factor. After the interval I thought, right this is it, finally the factory. What could have been an amazing initial colourful set was somehow not so .... The ending was even more of a let down, why couldn't it have been ended with a song where we could have all joined in, clapped and left with a good feeling in our hearts?!

A PEDESTRIAN FIRST ACT

After seeing Matilda I really wanted to like this but found it a tad disappointing. The first act was so static that even the introduction of the golden ticket winners couldn't save it.Half of the cast spent most of the act lying in bed. When the character of violet was introduced, with a kind of rap, the song was unintelligible - I couldn't make out a word of it. Act two fared better - with some really good moments like the Oompa-Loompa's and the squirrels but ultimately it was all pretty underwhelming. No stand out songs no big production numbers. A slight gasp of recognition arose from the audience when Willy Wonka sang a world of pure imagination. Great theatre, good seats but overall it wasn't bad it just wasn't great.

AN OPPORTUNITY MISSED

Unfortunately Charlie did not live up to my expectations. The songs, whilst some very funny, were not memorable and not very imaginative. Act one was far to long and the introductions of each child winning the golden tickets was done far to quickly. Within about ten minutes and 4 songs later, all 4 children had been announced as winners. It was too quick and needed more time to be spent on that moment as it felt unnecessarily rushed. Finally when it comes to the moment when we are about to see inside the chocolate room, I could feel goosebumps as the curtain rises, only to be VERY disappointed by a tacky plastic waterfall and a very unimaginative set. I was expecting real magic here! Despite the mostly disappointing parts of this show, some parts were good, such as the TV and nut room, also the glass elevator was magical. The cast was great but I believe that the show could have been so much better than it was! Not enough imagination and time was put into the key necessary areas.

DISAPPOINTING

Disappointing is the only word for this. Very slow first half, unmemorable music, dull set. Will not be rushing back to see this, other things much better in the West End.

1.0 star rating Robin from London,

DISAPPOINTED

Having seen, (and loved) Matilda I was expecting something similar but was very disappointed. As far as I'm concerned the score was very weak (I can't remember a single good song), and cast and sets are underwhelming and on several occasions I really struggled to understand the words. There are far Far better shows on in the West End and I would advise that you see just about anything else but this.

1.0 star rating Rhiannon from Leicester

VERY DISAPPOINTING

I was very excited to watch this show but I found that although a lot of work and money had been spent on the set, it looked too over the top. The score was awful, no strong songs or strong actors. Too much was going on on the stage that at times you couldn't understand what was going on, overall very disappointed.

1.0 star rating Anonymous from London,

DISAPPOINTED

Really disappointed was expecting some of the original story and songs which did not happen. Very slow and my girlfriend who was so excited feel asleep. If people are saying the best show ever they have not been to another. I am no expert and have only been to Oliver which I would say was a million times better than this!! The actors were good but the storyline and songs were poor.
