ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!

I went to see Much Ado About Nothing last night which was its first performance. I had high expectations due to the casting and also due to my love of the play. It is safe to say it did not disappoint! David and Catherine sizzled as Beatrice and Benedick! They really captured their charcters! There was non stop laughter throughout and the way the production was staged worked perfectly. The modern twist gave the play a new lease of life. I am so glad that I was able to see this production and really hope it gets brought out on DVD because it is a must see!!!

A TRIUMPH!

I saw this play last night - the first night of the run - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cast was excellent and the staging very clever. Updating the action to post Falklands Gibraltar really gave the piece relevance. David Tennant and Catherine Tate were perfectly cast as Beatrice and Benedick - their on-stage chemistry really sparkled. I have never heard a Shakespeare audience scream with laughter before! I particularly enjoyed the 'Eavesdropping' scene. I would recommend this production to anyone

BRILLIANT PRODUCTION

David Tennant is fantastic, Catherine Tate marvellous and the rest of the cast aren't bad either! It is energetic, witty and very funny. Loved the staging and the costumes too.

VERY ENJOYABLE.

The cast as a whole, with some making their West End debut, told the story excellently, they were well rehearsed and handled the very few props or wardrobe problems so professionally. The stage was very well lit and had a revolving platform, which meant quick changes between scenes that allowed the performance to flow well. One small downside was the theatre was very warm during the first half of the show and I did hear that for some this had spoiled the first half but, I was totally caught up in the magic unfolding before me to be too bothered by it. The dance scenes were unexpected gems that were well choreographed and performed with enthusiasm by all members of the cast. There was a scene of short duration that had flashing lights, which we weren’t warned about and could have posed an issue for anyone susceptible to this. Even though this was only the second preview the performance was polished and as a friend who was with me and not a major fan of either of the lead actors said ‘that was awesome’.

A GREAT EVENING OUT

I thoroughly enjoyed tonight's performance (Friday) The 5th night. David Tennant is just outstandingly good but the rest of the cast were also excellent. Very good chemistry between Benedick and Beatrice(Tennant and Tate). I loved the modern staging - the set was simple and cleverly done. The dancing and music worked and the cast really looked to be enjoying themselves If I were to be picky the chemistry between Hero and Claudio left a bit to be desired - I think due to Tom Bateman who was probably the weakest of the leads - but not by any means bad and Hero's performance at the wedding was gripping. A standing ovation showed that it wasn't just me who though it was great entertainment. Best bit -the evesdropping scene is just hilarious pure farce.

FANTASTIC EVENING

I went to see this show on Wed 18 May. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. I would like to thank not only David and Catherine but all the cast who gave a brilliant performance. The eavesdropping scenes were hilarious and extremely well acted; the dancing and singing were also great but seeing David in a skirt - that definitely was a surprise! My advice to anyone who is thinking about going to see this production is "GO" you will not be disappointed. The cast received a standing ovation at the end and it was well and truly deserved.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

This was the best thing I have ever seen in the theatre. David Tennant and Catherine Tate are perfect for the parts of Beatrice and Benedick and were hilarious. The chemistry between these two actors who are also great friends was obvious and just added to the performance. Loved David Tennant playing the part in his native Scottish accent speaking Shakespearian English - made him even funnier. And setting the action in modern times was inspired. The standing ovation the whole cast received at the end was so well deserved - go and see it if you possibly can!

OUTSTANDING

Saw the play Sat 21st Evening performance, with friends. What an outstanding triumph. I am a big fan of Shakespeare and we try to see a couple of shows a year, this was by far the best to date. Claudio and Hero, sublime and from two actors who were debuting in the west end, Bravo to you both fantastic performances. The rest of the cast, brilliant, fantastic performance by the villians Don John and his boys. The set was clever and tidy, couldn't work out how they move the pillars, that's going to bug me.... David and Catherine everything we hoped for, they sparked off each other and the rest of the cast. And judging by the standing ovation at the end I would say I wasn't the only one who had enjoyed the show. Well done to everyone involved a very enjoyable evening. Can i make one suggestion "Twelfth Night" next please, you guys would do it such justice.

HUGE THUMPS UP!!!!!!!!

Saw the Production on the 21st of May, was really looking forward to seeing it - And it didn't disappoint!! Was laughing throughtout, even through the small cockups made on stage, this made us all laugh even more. But in the end the cast carried on regardless - True Professionals!! David and Catherine were probably the one's who most came to see, but Everyone of the Cast performed brilliantly that night. Enjoyed it so much, have tickets to see it again in July...

OUTSTANDING!

I saw Much Ado on Friday evening with my 18 yr old daughter. She is an avid Shakespeare fan, loves the theatre and Much Ado is her favourite play and we also both love DT and CT. Were we disappointed? Absolutely not. It takes quite a lot to impress me, and make me laugh as much as I did. But I was very very impressed and found it very very funny. I was so surprised by the setting, but loved it, being from that era... Everything about it was perfect in fact I could watch it over and over. Seeing David in lace tights - well what can you say. I have no criticism at all. My daughter also loved every minute of it. We both want to go again. Shakespeare, we know is a genius, but in this instance so is the director and so are All of the cast. Supreme.

MUCH ADO ABOUT SOMETHING......

I came to see 'Much Ado' last Saturday afternoon and my heart sank when the curtain rose and the play began. I am a great lover of Shakespeare, and usually prefer it played as 'Shakesperian' in period. However, this production was brilliant and I just loved it. The 'modernist' presentation did not spoil one moment of my enjoyment. David Tennant and Catherine Tate were just right as Beatrice and Benedict; there is a natural empathy between them and they used it perfectly to portray their two very believable characters. All the roles were well cast, and excellent in their portrayals. I heard every word from the back of the stalls, although inevitably I lost a few due to the laughter from the audience. The lightheartedness of the comedy came across very well, and it contrasted superbly with the amazement and sincerity shown between B and B when at last they discover and acknowledge their mutual feelings. Expensive treat for a pensioner but worth every penny. Bring the family!

I HAVENT LAUGHED SO MUCH IN YEARS!!

This is the funniest show that I have seen since Avenue Q!!You laugh from the very begining to the end. I dont do Shakespeare but my son wanted to go and I was tempted by the Catherine tate/ Davis Tennemt double act! Well it really pays off.. looks as though they are having a real party on the stage! All the shakespearian language is still there and delivered in a very professional manner .Dogberrry and his crew also deserve a mention. They too had the audience in fits!BOOM!

FANTASTIC EVENING WITH DAVID TENNANT

I went last night with two teenagers and still so excited about this production.David and Katherine sparred so well together with laughs and genuine comic timing. All the actors were so good and the music and set were just right. You could see how David tennant took such pleasure on being on stage and skipped off the stage after a long standing ovation. Truely, the best production I have seen in years!I urge you to get some tickets for a moving and joyous experience in a beautiful theatre.

YOU MUST SEE THIS!

I saw this show two nights ago, and I wouldn't hesitate to go again. It is hilarious, and the modern twist they used made it "user- friendly" for people who are usually not interested in Shakespeare. The actors were brilliant! Catherine Tate and David Tennant are SO good together--whether on the TV screen, or on the stage. We sat in the Royal Circle, Row D, and had a great view. Go see this show. You won't regret it.

MUCH ADO, BUT CERTAINLY NOT ABOUT NOTHING!

I went to see Much Ado on Friday 20th May, and quite frankly I loved it! The entire ensemble cast were brilliant and was evidently a production they had just as much pleasure performing as we had watching. A sublime piece of theatre, highly recommended. Went to see it last night (Thurs 26 May) ... what a great show ... brilliantly cast, great acting, clever use of space and set and David and Catherine at their comedy best! Well worth going to see if you are a fan of both of them ... modern twist kept it fun and modern ... its was very funny and most enjoyable.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

my daughter & I went to see this new production of Shakespeares comedy & it far exceeded my expectations. . it was absolutely brilliant. David tenant was quite outstanding as was Catherine Tate & the entire cast. I don't normally like any play that is set in a different period than the author intended but I absolutely loved the fact that this was set in the 1980's in Gibraltar. The costumes, music & dancing were so of the period It made me a touch nostalgic for my youth which seems almost an impossible achievement for a play written so long ago. I cannot recommend this production enough . . it's a brilliant night out !! It's the first time I've been to a play that has received a standing ovation with the entire house on it's feet. if you see nothing else all year . . see this

A BIG BRAVO!

A really accessible, funny and fun performance. I used to teach Shakespeare and I used to go on and on about how his plays CAN be the most enjoyable in the world, if only given the chance in production. Well here we are: at last a team with the wit to let Shakespeare be as downright brilliant as he should be! All wonderful - cast, set, the chemistry between B and B... We were standing and cheering at the end, and so was everyone round us. THAT'S what Shakespeare and this production deserve. Bravo!

BRILLIANT

I saw the matinee performance on Saturday 28th May with my friend. It was excellent. David Tennant was amazing, really funny. Both him and Catherine Tate are brilliant actors and you could see how much fun they were having, as well as the audience. I wasn't sure at first about the modern dress, but it did work. This is the best version I have seen. We sat in the 3rd row of the stalls and had an excellent view, and could hear everything. If I had the money, I would definitely see it again. The best scene was when they were evesdropping on the conversations they were supposed to hear. I'm very surprised at some of the comments made that they didn't enjoy it, they certainly didn't go on the same day I did. I would like to point out that in Shakespeare's day the audience got involved, the actors interacted with them, and there was slapstick and playing for a laugh. If you haven't yet got a ticket for this play, I would suggest getting one now, you will not be disappointed!

BRILLIANT

I went to see this yesterday and not really being a fan of either David Tennant or Catherine Tate (I love the story of Much Ado) I was not sure what to expect. Well I need not have worried - it was brilliant. David is such a good comedy actor. I was crying with laughter and it takes a lot to even make me laugh aloud. Loved the stage set, the costumes (especially David dressed as Madonna) and thought the whole cast were excellent. I was particularly impressed with Tom Bateman who I found out was making his debut on the London stage. I expect to hear a lot more of him in the future. Beg, steal or borrow a ticket - you have to go and see this

FANTASTIC

never been to a Shakespeare play before and I have never laughed so much. David and Catherine were fantastic together and the supporting cast were brilliant. The theatre was beautiful and intimate I felt very close to the action. I will definitely go and see more Shakespeare he's cool.

AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT - WANT TO SEE AGAIN!

This production is simply brilliant. From the stage scenery, the cast, slapstick elements, and incredible performances by Tennant and Tate, everything was right. The performance of Dogberry was comic genius and rightly got a round of applause everytime he left stage. I highly recommend this production and if anyone has a ticket and can't make it - I'll have your ticket!

A FANTASTIC EVENING

Much depended on this production as it was a birthday treat on 24/06/11 - well deserved standing ovation. The leads were a joy but the star for me was the young boy in the brief, but very meaningful, silent visits to the stage. Would love to see it all over again.

A MUST-SEE PERFORMANCE

Absolutely brilliant! We were in row C and had a fantastic view of it all. I don't usually laugh out loud to comic performances, but this really had me laughing. David Tennant and Catherine Tate were brilliant, as were the rest of the cast. I saw Hamlet at the theatre when David Tennant was in it and that was good, but I enjoyed this much, much more. I want to see it again!!

5.0 star rating Jody Randall from Essex, England

MUCH ADO - THERE SHOULD BE, IT DESERVES IT

This is one of the slickest and best directed Shakespeare productions I have ever seen. There is a stella cast lead by the outstanding David Tennant and Katherine Tate, but this is an ensemble piece and whether the actors have a CV as long as your arm, or they are fresh from drama school each acquits themselves with aplomb. From the hilarious routines of Tate & Tennant over hearing how the other lovers them, to Leonarto's lossed daughter speech you will feel that you are watching a play that will be lauded for years to come. But again let it be said, there is not a single weak member within this cast, each performance is outstanding and they have all contributed to a production that will be talked about for years to come. The bar seems to be set with Shakespeare productions every year, this has raised that bar again.

Saw Much Ado yesterday and absolutely loved it. Took my 13 year old daughter, who hadn't been very keen, but she enjoyed it as well. FANTASTIC EVENING!

A superb, modern take on Shakespeare's play. I defy anyone not to love it. If there is anyone out there who thinks that Shakespeare is no longer relevant or is inaccessible, go and see this interpretation. You'll see Shakespeare in a whole new light!

LAUGHS OUT LOUD!

I do note not much about no thing Shakespeare (did I get it?!). .who cares..... I LOVED IT!. for my slower brain to catch on to the fast paced wit and understand the bevy of humorous meanings, the 80's approach hooked me in and I thought the costumes clever. I fell in love with the whole cast. For all Shakespeare scaredy cats like me who worry about getting lost in dialogue but want in on the bard ...don't be intimidated by a minority of snooty purists, It's FAB, FUNNY and MOVING in parts. CARRY ON' 'MUCH ADO' Wham bam......thank you very much!

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC

Went to see this with a work friend, the matinee performance on 16th July and loved it. It was the first time I had been to see a favourite actor live on stage (David Tennant) and I wasn't disappointed. All the cast members were very good, but David and Catherine were both outstanding. They were both very funny, timing was perfect and they switched from funny to serious in a second. David really involved the audience, especially in one part when mid-speech someone in the audience made a noise, David paused - made a comment in the person's direction and carried on with what he was saying. That caused much laughter. The revolving stage was a clever idea, to incorporate scenery changes. We were quite high up in the Grand Circle, but could see and hear everything, with a great view of the whole stage. Much clapping and cheering at the end, which was well deserved for everyone. Would love to go again, but finances will not allow it. Do hope it will be put onto dvd somehow.

SIMPLY DEVINE!

Right from the very opening the show was comfortable and pleasing to watch. This was their 72nd performance, the sheer quality that was consistent throughout really made a difference. It's great also to see this interpretation on Shakespeare's original, giving it a modern and accessible touch to the audience. The supporting cast were fantastic, really defining those ensemble moments and as for the main cast they were just phenomenal, David Tennant and Catherine Tate showcased everything that is good and right about British theatre. Overall a stunning production, both hilarious and gripping. Best moment would be David Tennant eavesdropping, just pure original comedy!

SIZZLING SHAKESPEARE

Much AdoAbout Nothing was performed with all the comedic vereve it was always meant to have! The whole cast played it with a warmth and depth it deserved. Of course Tennant and Tate were amazing with the most wonderful timing in the scenes. I worried about the setting of it in the 80s but it worked brilliantly! If you want a fantastic, entertain evening out go see this. Thanks cast for the most wonderful evening.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

To sum it up I'm not sure if it could be any better to be honest. It was hilarious, dramatic and moving. It was the first time I went to see the performance of much ado about nothing and it is now my favourite play of William Shakespeare or anyone. Everyone acted outstandingly especially David Tennant and Catherine Tate. A lot of credit should go to the amazing directer because of the timing of the jokes, I haven't laughed so much in ages! I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone and everyone. I mite even go again depending on the price of the tickets. I believe it was the 73rd performance on the 27th of July. I hope you go as you will really enjoy it.

A DREAM COME TRUE

When I first heard that my favourite shakespear play was going on West end, and that my favourite two TV actors were playing the roles of Benedick and Beatrice, I practically cried with happiness. Months later I finally was able to see the show and it is one of the BEST shows in the world. The Comedy timing was perfect and the acting was superb. The whole cast took amazingly to there roles. I also noticed that several people were debuting there talent, and what amazing talent they had. Every single cast member made the performance that extra bit special. I am glad that we have such brilliant actors in our country and that theatre is such an inspiration. I hope that one day I will be able to perform in a theatre with such passion that was show in Much Ado About Nothing. To Tom Bateman, the young man who plays Claudio, I wish you luck in your final year at LAMDA and that I am now a massive fan of your acting and you are a inspiration to all young actors.

WOW

WOW !!! bloody fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!! firstly let me apologise if i was slightly too overexcited to anyone who sat next to me in the fourth row from the front on Saturday 23 July, my daughter had booked the tickets as a surprise i knew i was seeing a show in London but no idea it was this one WOW oh my god what a surprise. I also apologise to Mr Tenant ( David) and Ms Tate ( Catherine) for standing up and screaming and clapping so loudly at the end my version of the mexican wave - i myself think this was an out of body experience and completely out of my control but my daughter who sat next to me cringing with embarrassment thinks (knows me to well) otherwise!!! . the show was bloody fantastic, i loved Hero , and the police / army chap who was the best Ass !!! hilarious , i am obviously a huge fan of Mr T and Ms T but also a lover of Shakespeare and this so far was my favourite , i cried with laughter so much so that on Sunday my ribs and stomach muscles ached so much i thought i had been to the gym!!! David was perfect as usual his delightful and charming smile and glint in his eyes well need i say more ! his acting was spot on for the character and yes i have read the other reviews but baaa humbug to all of them who do not do u justice . to me it was very much a splendid do about nothing and a night i will not forget, best night out ive had in a longtime and thankyou again . superb. and thankyou to my daughter Laura for buying the tickets for my birthday love u millions and yes i will embarrass u again its in my job description as a parent to take great delights in doing so. love you all Anna

SHAKESPEARE AS THE BARD INTENDED

I first saw this in June with my 12 year old daughter, and it is the funniest play we have seen in a long time. Shakespeare intended the play to be bawdy and funny, and this production is just that. The cast were clearly enjoying themselves & despite the wettest night of the year, their mood was infectious. I think a mature 12 year old is fine, but no younger, and yes I would take an older person .

FANTASTIC

I actually think this is quite possibly one of the best productions I have ever seen. Catherine Tate brings such vitality to the role of Beatrice and the pairing of her and David Tennant is masterful. The comedic performances from both of them were hilarious. I cried with laughter and also shed a tear. You MUST see this!

WONDERFUL NIGHT OF FUN

Recently while on holiday in London I managed to catch 2 of the preview shows. The production is excellent and the cast were uniformly very good and displayed great verve and enthusiasm in this much loved play. David Tennant brought his usual energy on and off stage (he nearly bowled me over in the foyer on one evening!) He demonstrated a genuine ability and talent to subtly reveal the nuances of Benedict even through moments of high comedy. Catherine Tate's Beatrice was a good match for Benedict in that Catherine’s performance took the audience through the full gamut from comedy to despair and finally to joy, hope and promise. David and Catherine obviously enjoyed themselves and their joy was reflected in their performances. I would unequivocally recommend this production to all ages and I too, would hope that there are plans to record and release a DVD. Hope the troubles in London have not directly effected anyone connected with the production. Thanks for 2 wonderful nights!

THE BEST PRODUCTION PERFORMED ON A STAGE

I went to see Much Ado About Nothing on Tuesday, August 9th. I attended because of Tennant and Tate but was impressed by the entire cast. The performance was absolutely brilliant and I recommend it to anyone who can make it into London before the run ends. Tennant and Tate had wonderful chemistry as all would assume. The folly of Shakespeare's play was not lost on the actors. I commend the director for such a lovely job. I loved seeing the passion for theatre that the actors had. Thank you for sharing your joy and gifts with us.

SPLENDID SHAKESPEARE

This has to be one of the most imaginative interpretations of this often maligned comedy by the bard. I have seen many productions during many years of theatre going but this was, by far and away, the most enjoyable. I was with my partner for whom this was a first Shakespeare.I am delighted to say that he is now eagerly awaiting the next one! The whole cast deserve the highest praise. If I were to single out individuals it would have to be Tom Batemans' Claudio and Andy James' Don Pedro. Also I would like to mention Kathryn Hunt. I have always admired this actors' work and she did not disappoint-great work! Finally, the two leads.David Tennants' comic timing is just superb and his connection with the audience is amazing. Long admired his work in all it's forms but he definitely excels on stage with a live audience. Catherine Tate is a perfect foil and the empathy between her and David Tennant is tangible. T'n'T - pure dynamite!!! A total joy of a production.

Brilliant! Went to see this on Friday night, first Shakespeare play I've seen on stage. Laughed so much, really enjoyed, impressed by all performances, as intense at times and fairly long play but especially of David and Catherine both really, really amazing actors. Feels special, to have seen both of them in the same play. Would recommend highly.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE

Oh wow - I loved it and had great seats in the Royal Circle. David Tennant gave, as expected, a brilliant performance and Catherine Tate was equally fantastic. The rest of the cast, some of whom were making their stage debut helped make this a complete show rather than just about Beatrice & Benedict. I really hope that someone will have the foresight to film this and put it onto DVD once the run has finished, as I would eagerly sit and watch it again. My 8 year old nephew would also like to see it, (primarily because it's Dr Who), but what better way to introduce him to the world of Shakespeare, and a first rate production. If you can get tickets for this, then please go. You won't be disappointed.

BRILLIANT!!

Went to see this Saturday night and was enthralled. All the cast deserve a mention - Andy James in particular was excellent - but no surprise that the outright winners were David and Catherine - and their relationship not just with each other but to the audience as well. We were eating out of their hands! It was exceptionally funny in the first half - the paint scene was incredible - and dramtaically dark second half, but ending in a dance! Good moves!! The cast completely deserved their noisy standing ovation. Shame there were no signings that night though. Boo.

A TEENAGER'S REVIEW

I am a great lover of Shakespeare for my young age and have been trying to persuade my friends that Shakespeare is for young adults for a couple of years. This play I think will definately make them understand William Shakespeare. It was my first viewing of Much Ado About Nothing, and totally exeded my expediations. The beautiful words fitted wonderfully with the comedy, and the way the actors threw themselves into the roles made you want to jump up and include yourselves into the super scenes! Catherine Tate made a fiesty and proud Beatrice and never fell out of character once, David Tennant too, clearly adored being on stage and used that to be a hilarious and ethusastic Benedick. The rest of the cast too, made their parts spotless in performance, serious but funny as well. Altogether a fantastic night out, with much laughing out loud, tears in eyes and applauding.

WISH I COULD HAVE GONE EVERY NIGHT

I saw Much Ado About Nothing in mid-July and went into the theatre not really knowing much about the play itself, just wanting to see David Tennant and Catherine Tate live. Not only was the play brilliant, but David, Catherine, and the rest of the cast were as well! After seeing it the one time, I wanted to go back as many times as I could. It was absolutely amazing, and David and Catherine have a chemistry that just adds an extra layer of joy and comedy to an already funny play. I had standing- room-only tickets and would have stood for nearly 3 hours again if given the chance to see Much Ado again. I do hope they release this onto DVD - I would love to have this to watch at any time.

BRILLIANT

The two nights before this performance, David was too ill to perform, but you would not have been able to tell by his performance tonight. Was pleasantly surprised by the very creative on stage directing, it left me in tears of laughter at points! The whole cast was brilliant, now in their last few shows, and left me with a buzz after it ended. Wish I could go again.

I have rarely left a theatre feeling so good about life and feeling so pleased about the human condition of being able to fall in love. What a great feeling, DT & CT are very believeable - no need to suspend reality here. Absolutely fab. I could easily go again tonight !

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!

David and Catherine were outstanding! This has been the best version of the play I have ever seen. The cast were great, and very professional in certain circumstances. What can I say the last night is always the best. I just wish this was recorded as I know alot of people who would have loved it. This show should definately go on tour!

BRILLIANT!

I saw this as an 18th birthday treat and it made me cry with laughter and broke my heart at the same time. It was amazing and deserved the standing ovation it got. To top it off I met Catherine Tate at the end. Never had such a good birthday!! It was brilliant!

BRILLIANT

Saw it on the second night and it was absolutely brilliant. The whole cast is perfect. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are that it was a bit on the long side (the seats are small with limited leg room) and I didn't think the smoking was really necessary - even for period colour.

A MUST SEE!

Saw the performance last night and honestly, it's one of the best incarnations of Much Ado that's been around in a long time! David Tennant is brilliant-- playing a very quick witted, if slightly manic, Benedick. Whilst Catherine Tate is a delightful Beatrice. Together they have enough chemistry to make it a believable interaction. The same praise has to be given to the other cast members. Especially Tom Bateman who gives a very strong performance as Claudio. This play has everything that will keep all of the family entertained.

BRILLIANT FUN

What a shame that some people are such Shakespeare snobs ! Shakepeare wrote for the common people (not the elite) and in a way that they would have understood. David Tennant showed what a real gift for comedy he has, and it was obvious that he and Catherine Tate were having a ball. The eavesdropping scenes were very funny and had the entire audience in stitches. The staging, costumes, and music were great. Plaudits must go to the other leads too. My only tiny gripe is that Claudio seemed to get over the news of Heros death rather too quickly. Otherwise fab evening. I've seen it twice and would happily see it again.

OUTSTANDING!

I had the absolute pleasure of watching Much Ado About Nothing yesterday and it was just outstanding. Although I know many professional reviewers had much to say which was negative about Catherine Tate, but they were spectacularly wrong - she is the perfect Beatrice and coupled with a Benedick who at one point had me laughing so much I thought I would expire, it is the perfect way to spend a few hours getting reaquainted with the Bard at his best. A wonderful cast who brought so much have been somewhat eclipsed with the justified publicity of the leads, but were also outstanding. The only reason it is not a five was because there was a little too much chopping about with the script for me and a couple of frankly, daft and unnecessary additions. Nothing major, or in any way to detract from the show, but for me it was a silly blot on what was wonderful and utterly recommended.

O WOE IS ME TO HAVE SEEN WHAT I HAVE SEEN...

Was at the matinee Saturday. Now I went to see Shakespeare not the Catherine Tate Show. Catherine, why on earth did you feel the need to revert to a sketch show character every 5 minutes? By the interval it was seriously getting on my nerves. Much Ado is not my favourite play but I really thought that David and Catherine could pull this off (my only other reference being Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson) and in all honesty David was beyond brilliant and had me almost crying with laughter - the comic timing was spot on. But Catherine what happened? All I could think was why anyone would want to marry your Beatrice! That said I came out smiling because it really is a feel good play and if you can get past the Catherine Tate Show (or in fact if that is what you are expecting to see) it is great. 10/10 David & also John Ramm and Elliot Levey who were fab but 4/10 Catherine. Sorry but you nearly made me regret choosing Much Ado over Betrayal and the gorgeous Douglas Henshall!

VERY GOOD..

This is a play I've seen many times over the years and it's Will's best comedy, in my opinion. This is a mostly excellent production with a large and illustrious cast. Both David T and Catherine T steal all the scenes they're in -although she does have an unfortunate tendency to fall back on all her previous characterisations. She's a very fine actress and could surely have created a new one for Beatrice. David, on the other hand (who I've seen before on stage), is staggeringly good, as ever. I'm not sure Will Shakespeare would approve of some of the ways his story has been brought screaming into the 20th century (esp the scene with Boracchio and Margaret - not normally seen at all), but one neat by-product was to allow us to have some sympathy for Claudio after the 'wedding'(usually VERY hard to do !)...and I found I had tears in my eyes as he was reunited with Hero at the end. Overall very enjoyable, well-acted by all (and I LOVED the Watch !!) but occasionally very loud and brash.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We saw this production on August 19th and thoroughly enjoyed it. David Tennant's goofy, sincere, passionate Benedick is without question the best part of the show.

THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE

what a lot of snobs there seem to be these days, appalled that people who've never seen Shakespeare before should dare to applaud someone just for coming on. Bet that never happened to Richard Burbage or Will Kempe. I wouldn't say it was definitive Shakespeare but i thought it was on the whole well done. I'm not a fan of resetting, but it seemed to work on this occasion, and it was worth it just to see DT in his dress whites. Having seen the Open Air Theatre version 2 years ago it was an interesting contrast, particularly the very different, but no more slapstick, aproach this time to the hidden Beatrice and Benedick overhearing what they were meant to. I didn't spot Nan, but there were clearly several bits of familiar inflection from Katherine Tate, but is there any reason why there shouldn't be? It's not as if shs changed the lines to ask if she was bovvered. I was particularly impressed by Claudio, making his debut.

MORE HIGHBROW THAN "DR. WHO"!

Having studied the text, I went to see the play as David Tennant is quite an accomplished Shakespearean actor. On the other hand,I suspected that many people in the audience were diehard Whovians who just wanted to see two of its stars. It had a bit of a pantomime feel at the start and I did so want to shout: "Boo,hiss," when Don John first appeared! Unfortunately the atmosphere was spoilt when members of the audience laughed at Beatrice's words: "Kill Claudio". All - in - all it was an entertaining play, but don't expect to see it as an extension of the television programme.

SHOW FOR LAUGHS

My wife and I treated ourselves to this show for our anniversary, and were NOT disappointed (apart from David Tennant being too ill to perform). Tennant's understudy gave a terrific performance and Tate was as funny as ever. Great support from a good cast made this a very funny show with plenty of laugh out loud moments. I would strongly recommend this for anyone who wants to see a light hearted show (although it' shakespeare) as they will walk away with a smile on their faces!

ENJOYABLE

The play was a very enjoyable way to spend an evening but is not a production that will stay in my memory. I found both David and Catherine excellent. The solemnity of David during the jilting scene worked well. I'm not aware of Catherine's tv work and if she really was playing up to previous characters this went over my head. There was zero chemistry between Hero and Claudio.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

I saw the play last night on it fourth night. I have never watched Doctor Who so I was not aware of Catherine's and David's TV chemistry. I was disappointed mainly because I could not hear them - I was sitting at the back of the stalls. Catherine Tate muffled some of her lines and David Tennant spoke too fast. I was really confused by his entrance in the first scene - was it necessary? Hero and her lover had no chemistry and no presence. I did not really enjoy the modern twist to the play although I enjoyed the dancing and the singing. Good attempt but in my opinion if you want a Shakespeare play to be a success keep it simple, the audience are there for the acting and the play not for the stage effects. Oh and make sure that the actors speak loud enough for the audience to hear their lines.

DISAPPOINTING

I think I must have been the only one at the first night who did not enjoy the play. Catherine Tate went through every one of her TV characters including 'nan' and i could not hear what she was saying. David Tennant over hammed it up and although there was a sense of fun throughout, it did not make up for the lack of depth. The whole of the first act was played as farce and the best part was taken by Hero's father. I was VERY disappointed

NO

No, Anonymous, you were not the only person who did not really enjoy this play. I'm remaining anonymous because my partner parted with a lot of hard earned cash to take me, and we travelled a long way. The big problem for me was that the audience was obviously made up largely of fans of the two stars, who would have got the acclaim for just standing there. So there was much false laughter throughout, but why laugh at the tragedy? For a Shakespeare novice, it was very confusing. David Tennant appeared not stretched in this role, and Catherine Tate, who is clearly capable did revert to her comic characters. Overall, very disappointing. An evening spoilt by an audience of groupies, who appeared not to be able to give the stars and the rest of the cast the respect they deserve. But it wasn't the best production either. Sorry team.

SLAGS, DRAGS AND FAGS

Well that was very disappointing. Yes, Tennant was good, but so understretched. Hammy for something to do maybe? I heard every one of Tate's character voices - what was Nan doing in the chapel hooting? And yes, the audience was largely made up of their fans who screeched, clapped and cheered most entrances and exits to the point where they did it inappropriately and without meaning. But Adam James was brilliant. Silly teetering heels meant no-one moved with grace, but sort of scuttled everywhere. Slags, drags and fags? Well, it wouldn't have surprised me if Hero had been off with someone else - where was the virginal innocence? And Benedick in drag? I think not - he was too much the man to debase himself in that way. And the cigarettes? Every character, all the way through? Surely they could act nonchalent/cool/bored etc without needing the giveaway prop? A fine clutch of actors, poorly used and a rich text brayed over by the audience. Sad.

DISAPPOINTED

Stagegirl - I couldn't agree more with every word you say. Adam James was so good as, I thought, was Tom Bateman. The slapstick approach to the humour meant that folk who knew no better drowned out the the dialogue and the characterisations were in the main superficial. Catherine Tate's references to her well known characters were tiresome and I found her Beatrice's wit to come from a place of malice rather than goodness and fun. I now have to get me to the Globe for an emergency production in order to get things in proper perspective again. I am glad I saw it if only to remind me of the quality of Shakespeare I can get for £5 across the river!

THE CATHERINE TATE SHOW HITS THE WEST END

I completely agree with an earlier reviewer - this is shakespeare as farce. Catherine Tate gives us the full range of her TV show characters, pulls faces and gurns, while Tennant hams it up unmercifully. My rating is entirely for the supporting cast members, who have to struggle against the leading actors panto and the shrieking laughter of the audience whenever Tate rolls her eyes. The whole play is a blatant vehicle for the TV stars, and while Tennant at least appears to understand his part, Tate simply treats the play as a sketch in her TV show.

1.0 star rating Theatrelover from London, UK

DISAPPOINTING...

I'm frankly baffled by the reviews which claim this to be a good, even great, production, but suspect that for most of the reviewers Tate and Tennant could have stood reading the phone book... From middle stalls Tate was largely inaudible, while Tennant tended to gabble; neither displayed any feel for the language. The director clearly played almost everything for laughs, with the added problem of unnecessary additions which detracted from the play - really excessive smoking and overloud music being the most obvious, but even blocking of the cast positions was pretty poor - it was apparantly designed for impact rather than credibiity. OK, this was an early performance (we saw it on the first night) and hopefully it will improve; but, unless you're an uncritical fan of Tate and/or Tennant, you may be better off with another production.

C LONDON

Save your money, make a sharp exit from the box office [before handing over any cash], head South of the river to the Globe! Eve Best and Charles Edwards in another league!! 1* for the pleasant set / design.

NOT FOR ME

Just didn't work for me. Although Tennant is indeed a good actor it was all just too silly. I didn't stay for the second act, the lack of leg room was also an issue.
