Like the man in her most famous poem, Not Waving but Drowning, Wanamaker's Stevie Smith is all covert signals
The Telegraph
Olivier-winning actress Zoe Wanamaker reprises her role from the award-winning Chichester Festival Theatre production of Stevie, a biopic about poet artist Stevie Smith. Hugh Whitemore's award-winning play will be revived in 2015 at the Hampstead Theatre with Wanamaker returning there for the first time in 20 years since starring in Terry Johnson's production of Dead Funny.
More recently, Wanamaker has enjoyed accolades in productions such as Passion Play at the Duke Of Yorks Theatre in 2013 and The Cherry Orchard at the National Theatre in 2011.
Wanamaker takes on the biographical role of Stevie Smith, taking a look at both her work as a poet and the private woman behind the prose. The play tells the story of a humble publishing company's secretary who spends her evenings with her beloved aunt in a world of Battenberg cake and gossip while behind the scenes she succeeds in writing piercing poetry and prose that will one day bring her fame and accolades.
