Currently playing at the Noel Coward Theatre

Matthew Lopez's two-part epic, The Inheritance opened at the Noel Coward Theatre on Saturday (13 October) to much anticipation. But what did the critics think?

The Times was full of praise for the production, awarding it five stars and saying that the play was 'Like immersing yourself in a great novel... A Glorious Achievement'. The Evening Standard was equally as impressed, also awarding the production with five stars and saying 'Stop the clocks; the race is won. Here is the play of this year and last year and quite possibly next year as well'. The Arts Desk said 'Daldry's performers, Bob Crowley's spare scenic reveals and Jon Clark's sensitive lighting make for admirable company on a long journey. To be seen, and not just for the sake of it.'

With direction by Stephen Daldry, The Inheritance stars Vanessa Redgrave, Jack Riddiford, John Benjamin Hickey, Hugo Bolton, Robert Boulter, Andrew Burnap, Hubert Burton, Paul Hilton, Samuel H. Levine, Syrus Lowe, Michael Marcus, Kyle Soller and Michael Walters.

What is The Inheritance about?

It was 1983 when the AIDS crisis reared its head in New York's flourishing gay scene, causing worldwide panic and mistrust towards gay men. Now a whole generation has passed after the countless deaths caused by the cruel disease; Lopez's poignant and tear-jerking drama examines the legacy of gay men today in New York, where reminders of the epidemic are still all-too real. Centred on a young man who finds love unexpectedly, and who also has to see his friend suffer and die from AIDS, this heart-rending work will have you reaching for the tissues.
