A musical that has dominated the West End since its opening in 1985, Les Miserables' tale of heartbreak and hope has been seen by over 70 million people worldwide! With the famous original being put to bed on the 13th of July, and the updated version (which has been a huge success in the USA) taking its place in December, we take a look at why this musical is still so loved over thirty years on.
The Story
Adapted by Victor Hugo's mammoth novel (made up of five volumes and 1,900 pages!) Les Miserables is famous for its quite heart wrenching, in some parts (almost all of it), and hopeful plots and sub-plots. From the tragic story of Fantine to the magical story of Marius and Cosette, Les Miserables has plenty to sink your teeth into. Also, did we mention that it's set against the tumultuous backdrop of the French Revolution?!
The Music
Written by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil (and adapted by Herbert Kretzmer), Les Miserables features some of the most famous pieces of music in the world. From the momentous, I Dreamed A Dream, to the spine-tingling One Day More, Les Miserables' music is played across the globe. From Orchestra's to your living room karaoke everyone knows the music from Les Miserables!

The Production
From the intricate costumes to the iconic staging Les Miserables has proven time and time again that it's worth every penny! One of the show's draws is the iconic revolving stage, which was a relatively new revelation when the show first opened. And let's not forget that epic Barricade! Even though the original stage is being ditched when the show returns in December (Boo!) the musical will not lose any of its magic. With the newer version boasting of some pretty epic stagey additions, we can't wait to see what new Les Miserables magic there is to be had!
Whether you're a die-hard fan or new to the musical, Les Miserables has everything you could possibly wish for a night in the West End! You now have three different ways in which you can see it!
The fabulous original continues to play at the Queen's Theatre until the 13th of July when it then plays a star-studded concert version at the Gielgud Theatre for four months, before returning to the Queen's in the brand new version in December!
