Dazzled in Dublin!
I saw this really wonderful performance of Antony and Cleopatra last night, live-streamed from the National Theatre to the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin. Sophie Okonendo was superb as Cleopatra, queenly and feisty in her stunning couture wardrobe designed by Evie Gurney and made in the NT workshop! Ralph Fiennes was a revelation as the pompous has-been, Antony. It was a pleasant surprise to hear a Scottish accent - Tunji Kasim as Caesar, v engaging as the young Turk preparing to depose the fading hero. The dynamic between the two leaders, alternately affectionate and competitive, was riveting. I particularly enjoyed the slimy performance of Tim McMullan as Enobarbus and almost ended feeling sorry for him. It's a very long production, 3.5 hours but well worth it. I'd say this is a must-see for anyone in London during the festive season. Spoiler alert - Antony takes a very long time to die! But guess that's Shakespeare's fault for giving him so many lines as he is about to expire...
