A disappointing flop

The elevator pitch for Cock is intriguing: a man in a long term gay relationship falls in love with a woman. Unfortunately this is where the good ideas stop. Bartlett is a poor sketch of character and John, M, W and F do not behave like human beings; no self respecting woman would do anything W does in this play. M’s irrationality is only highlighted in Egerton’s appallingly directed, limp wristed, hip-popped portrayal which belies belief when one is reminded that he has the patronage of the Sir Elton John. The plot is riddled with misogyny, from the characters and in the positioning of W. Luckily Anouka is not a bad actor and was able to maintain some semblance of an enjoyable experience with this character. Johnathan Bailey is the best thing in this but it’s a low bar. He pulls the play along with an adequate performance of an entirely unlikeable and irritating character. Unfortunately this wasn’t so bad it was funny. It was just bad. Save your money, give this one a miss.
