Quirky, fun, beautiful, loved it!
I so enjoyed this show. Doesn’t take itself too seriously despite touching on some sensitive subjects. Wonderful singing and great musical backing from orchestra; even a harpist! Charing Cross theatre is a quirky slightly down at heel little place and such an opulent production sat surprisingly well in this setting. I had a great night, was fun, visually beautiful and great singing.
Unexpectedly beautiful
We didn't know what to expect knowing it's a new musical and it was performed on quite a small stage. However we were hooked by the beautiful singing, clever lyrics, complex storyline and beautiful costumes and acting from minute one. Time flew by and the show was already over. I hope to see it again soon and I'll definitely tune into the soundtrack in the meantime!
Outstanding
A remarkable show. The compelling fusion of historical depth and contemporary relevance, coupled with a stunning score and engaging plot, made for an unforgettable experience. The characters were authentically portrayed. The costumes and setting were exquisite. Being there for the opening night was a privilege; this is destined for greatness.
Veronica and family
My friend recommended this. She was right 100%. The show/plot was elaborated, performing was excellent and the songs/music fantastic. It takes you to centuries back in Italy with important topics and my children (13 and 15) absolutely adored the whole time being sat down and listening. I would see it again and hopefully the cast will be selected to play in a greater theatre as they have the talent for it. I loved listening to the harp. Staff at the theatre were friendly and it was a perfect evening out.
Beautiful, Bold, and Totally Unique
Stiletto at the Charing Cross Theatre is unlike anything I’ve seen in a while. Set in 18th-century Venice, it tells a powerful story of ambition, love, and identity—with some truly stunning performances and gorgeous music. The cast is fantastic, the costumes are lush, and the whole thing feels fresh and original. It’s emotional, thought-provoking, and full of heart. If you’re up for something new and a bit different, Stiletto is absolutely worth a visit.
Less than the sum of its parts
For me, the performance of Stiletto is much less than the sum of its parts. It has an experienced creative team, and the acting, set, lighting and costumes are excellent. The musical numbers are fine, though often at odds with the dramatic mood - and it is particularly disappointing that a musical about the operatic scene in 18th Century Venice has absolutely no recognition of the music of that period (apart from some background harpsichord music during scene changes). Marco, the lead character, is supposed to be a castrato, but sings in a tenor voice. The underlying theme is sexual relationships, but the book is treats them in a 21st century and often clumsy way. A production with such a large cast (17) and orchestra (12) would normally be on a West End Stage. The programme curiously (and perhaps tellingly) says nothing about concept for the musical, and how it was developed. I give Stilletto 7/10 on the 'Bernardette Scale' (where Bernardette de Lourdes gets 10/10 as a failed musical)
