ENDGAME

The first 20 minutes were hideous. I really hated the short. I considered not going back for the main event ‘Endgame’. I’m really glad I did go back in. Although it’s not the most accessible play, it really was brilliantly acted. Alan Cummings, in particular, was outstanding. Yes, people left before the end but it’s worth persevering with if you can. Probably worth reading a synopsis of the play before you commit to buying tickets. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I have no desire to see it again but I’m really glad I have seen it. It made me think and reflect...but don’t go if you want escapism and a good yarn.

KNOWING YOUR BECKETT

Having never been to a Beckett play before, I was not prepared for what I found to be a rather grim experience. Not the actors' fault or the script, it is just the rather dark subject matter (in both plays). For those unfamiliar with Beckett's style, consider this before going. I won't be going to another Beckett play.

GREAT ACTING BUT HATED THE PLAY

Cummings and Ratcliffe were great but the material is pretty poor. There is not much of a story here. I left feeling that this was a couple of hours of my life wasted watching this. But if you like Waiting for Godot- you may like this play.

DULL

First comes the short. Entertaining enough. A short interval, then Endgame. Whilst I have no issue with the acting the play itself was dullsville. Several people leftbefore ghe end so I suspect I was not the only one who thought this. In fact, my companion felt the same with no prompting from me. It's hard to put my finger on quite what was wrong with it, but it just did not work for me.

GOOD ACTING, TERRIBLE PLAY

The acting was good, but watching this play was like having a conversation with a dementia sufferer. Save your money and your remaining time on this planet.

What we thought

Surprising RADICAL absurdity

Beckett's surrealist masterpiece frustrates, delights and bores, and is equal parts revelatory and completely inane.

Walking past the long line of fans queuing up outside the Old Vic stage door, I couldn't help but wonder if they knew exactly what they were letting themselves in for when they bought tickets to see Endgame.
