When Italian composer Guiseppe Verdi premiered his tragic opera Rigoletto in 1851, it was said to be so well received that audience members could be heard singing it in the streets the very next morning. Considered to be the first of his operatic masterpieces, the recognisable score comes to the Royal Opera House helmed by director Oliver Mears and conducted Verdi specialist Mark Elder.
