The Weir Review Round Up
Gather round for a pint and a story or two
One of the most anticipated revivals of the last decade, Conor McPherson's The Weir has taken up residence at the Harold Pinter Theatre until 6 December 2025. A quietly haunting modern classic, the story takes place in a small rural pub in Ireland, where a group of locals swap eerie tales over drinks, only to find that newcomer Valerie has a story of her own....
With a star-studded cast bringing these tales to life, including Oscar-nominated Brendan Gleeson as Jack, Owen McDonnell, Sen McGinley and many more, the show is written and directed by McPherson himself.
So, what did the critics think?

The Weir Critic Reviews
"If you love the Irish actor Brendan Gleeson because of anything or indeed everything he has been in... then do hasten to the see him make his West End debut at the age of 70. He's the craggy-faced poster-boy for Conor McPherson's spellbinding, atmospheric revival at the Harold Pinter Theatre of The Weir" - The Telegraph
"Almost 30 years on, the Irish playwright's intimate drama brims with painful memories and comedy brought to dazzling effect by a flawless cast" - The Guardian
"The decades have only added to it: this West End revival, directed by the Irish playwright himself, glows with wisdom and compassion. It's a magnificent piece of theatre: richly funny, deeply moving and superbly acted by an outstanding ensemble led by Brendan Gleeson." - The Financial Times
"Almost 30 years after it premiered in 1997, it's impressive how The Weir has stood the test of time. It catches an Ireland on the cusp of change, haunted by a mythic and painful past. But the warmth of the laughter that rolls off the audience is remarkable. And what better actor to pop the cork on such intoxicating liquor than the inscrutable, bearlike Gleeson?" - Daily Mail
"It's nearly 30 years since this sensitive blend of barroom yarn-spinning and low-key conversational soul-baring confirmed Irish playwright Conor McPherson as an exquisite theatrical storyteller. Now, in the first revival to be directed by its author, the play proves as haunting, and as stealthily emotionally devastating, as ever." - The Stage
"If this current revival directed by McPherson seemed a little undercooked on opening night, The Weir retains its power to beguile and unnerve. It also proves a splendid vehicle for the mighty presence of Brendan Gleeson, making his West End debut at the age of 70." - The Evening Standard
"Kate Phillips's performance is a model of understatement among the jokes and ghost stories" - The Times
"In a West End that's full of bombast big tunes, blinding lights, spectacular feats of stage engineering Conor McPherson's revival of his often-staged 1997 landmark play The Weir is a satisfyingly simple proposition." - The Independent
